What has been your involvement with Utah Women Run?

Early in my path to elected office, I attended a Real Women Run [Utah Women Run] event where former Governor Olene Walker was the main speaker. She talked about her journey to public office and it helped me garner the courage to take the leap of faith myself. Once I ran and served, I was then invited to speak at various Real Women Run events to share my story and encourage others to learn more about what it entails to run and serve. It has been enjoyable to learn about others’ journeys to elected office and to also share mine, with the hope of sparking the flame for others to do it.

Why is it important for you to be a member of Utah Women Run?

I am so grateful for the women who inspired me, mentored me, and helped me throughout my journey. Utah Women Run provides a great medium to give back to others the way others have given their time and effort to me. This organization provides a great forum for those interested in giving back to the greater good, whether it be through elected office, or learning more about other ways to serve. What’s most rewarding is seeing new candidates go through an election and then getting the opportunity to serve. Years ago, a great friend, Kim Rodela, attended one of these events and now she is doing a fantastic job serving on her local city council. I know she will continue to do great things in the future and it’s fun to think that this organization may have played a part in motivating her to run.

Do you have favorite memories from Utah Women Run experiences?

I once did a presentation on how running for office is like having a baby. There is excitement when you announce, especially if it’s your first baby (or first campaign). There are three trimesters (convention, primary, general election) with all the ups and downs that go along with each phase. Then you forget about all the pain as you have your next baby (re-election campaign). It was an entertaining and relatable discussion for the mom’s in the room and I’ve had numerous people remind me of that presentation years later. But the best memories are related to the relationships that have been built over the years with so many fantastic female leaders who are doing their part to mentor others.
